madonna and the holy child…

vatican

 was walking through tunnels of boring sculpture when this came about a turn and had me fixed on it…the infant christ and madonna…a really old lady who was shuffling along behind me stopped alongside…we stared at it together…she then tugged at my sleeve, looked me in the eye and said “that’s just like shakespeare’s sonnet…isn’t it?”

“which one??”

“18…i think…”

i came back home and looked it up in a book…

shall i compare thee to a summer’s day?

thou art more lovely and more temperate:

rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

and summer’s lease hath all too short a date;

sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines

and often in his gold complexion dimm’d;

and every fair from fair sometime declines,

by chance, or nature’s changing course untrimm’d;

but thy eternal summer shall not fade,

nor lose possessionof that fair thou ow’st;

nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,

when in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,

so long as men can breathe or eyes can see

so long lives this, and gives life to thee…

hmmm….i just think the painting looks beautiful for what it simply is…sonnet 18… or no sonnet 18…
